What is Composable Commerce?

Composable Commerce Definition

Composable commerce is an approach to building an online business from separate, independent components, each handling one function, instead of relying on a single all-in-one ecommerce platform. Any component can be replaced or upgraded without rebuilding the whole system.

How does it work?

Functions such as the storefront, search, checkout, and payments run as separate tools connected through APIs (interfaces that let systems exchange data). If a better search tool appears, it can replace the old one while everything else stays in place. The approach is closely related to headless commerce.

Who is it for?

Composable commerce offers flexibility but requires more integration work and technical capability. It typically suits mid-sized and large businesses with complex catalogs or many sales channels, where a Product Information Management (PIM) system often supplies consistent product data to every component.
