ETIM ADVANCED Definition
ETIM ADVANCED is an extension of the ETIM classification standard that adds a structured way to describe product families and configurable variants, where a single product exists in multiple combinations of options, sizes, or specifications.
It builds directly on top of ETIM BASIC: all the same classes, features, and values apply, with an additional layer of logic for modelling how variants relate to one another.
What problem does ETIM ADVANCED solve?
Many technical products, such as cables, conduits, enclosures, and drives, are not sold as a single fixed item. They come in ranges: different lengths, cross-sections, colours, ratings, or configurations. Without a standard way to represent this, manufacturers either publish a separate data record for every possible combination, which creates thousands of near-identical entries, or they collapse the range into a single vague record that loses the detail buyers need.
ETIM ADVANCED provides a model for defining a product family once, specifying which features vary, and linking individual variants back to the parent. This keeps data lean without sacrificing specificity.
Who is ETIM ADVANCED for?
It is most relevant for manufacturers whose catalogues include configurable or range-based products. Distributors benefit when receiving ADVANCED-structured data because it reduces duplication and makes variant relationships explicit, which simplifies import into catalogue and ERP systems.
For products that are straightforward and sold as fixed, individual SKUs, ETIM BASIC is sufficient. ETIM ADVANCED is the right choice when variant logic is genuinely part of how the product is sold and specified.
Does adopting ETIM ADVANCED require starting over?
No. Because ETIM ADVANCED is built on top of ETIM BASIC, any work already done to classify products in BASIC remains valid. ADVANCED adds structure around it rather than replacing it. Organisations typically adopt BASIC first and introduce ADVANCED when their data complexity or trading partner requirements make it necessary.
