What is a Product ID?

Product ID Definition

A Product ID is the unique internal identifier a system assigns to a product record to distinguish it from every other product. Unlike external identifiers such as a GTIN or an ASIN, which are shared across the market, the product ID belongs to the system that manages the data and is used to reference the product reliably in every operation.

Why does a product ID matter?

External codes can be missing, duplicated, or reassigned, which makes them unreliable as the anchor for a record. A stable internal product ID gives every attribute, asset, relationship, and channel listing a single, permanent thing to attach to. This is what lets data stay connected as products are enriched, matched, and exchanged between systems.

How does it work in a PIM?

In a PIM system, the product ID is the primary key that all other data links back to: variants reference their parent by ID, assets and attribute values attach to it, and integrations use it to map records between the PIM, ERP, and channels. Because it is system-owned and never reused, it provides the dependable backbone that external identifiers cannot.
