What is Attribute Set?

Attribute Set Definition

An Attribute Set is the complete collection of attribute groups that together define every field a given type of product needs. Where an attribute group bundles a handful of related fields, an attribute set assembles all the groups that apply to a product type into a single reusable template. The terms are sometimes used interchangeably, but a set operates one level up: it is made of groups.

Why do attribute sets exist?

Different product types need different data models, and rebuilding that model product by product does not scale. An attribute set captures the full field structure for a type once, so every product assigned to it inherits the same required and optional attributes. This keeps records consistent, prevents under-modeling, and makes it obvious which fields a new product must carry.

How do they work in a PIM?

In a PIM system, a product is assigned to an attribute set (often via its type or category), and it automatically inherits every group and field in that set. Irrelevant fields stay hidden, required ones are surfaced, and the set feeds directly into completeness scoring: a product counts as complete only when all required attributes across its set are filled. Because sets are defined centrally, changing the model for a whole product type is a single edit rather than a bulk update across records.
