What is a Product Family?
Product Family Definition
A product family is a group of products that share a common purpose, technology, or design lineage and are marketed together under a single umbrella. It sits above individual products and product lines in a catalog hierarchy, grouping everything that belongs to the same broad offering.
How is it different from a product line?
A product family is the broader grouping; a product line sits within it. A power tools manufacturer might have a "Cordless Power Tools" family containing separate product lines for drills, saws, and sanders. The family defines the shared identity; the line organises the specific products within it.
Why does it matter for product data?
Product families are useful for managing shared attributes and content at scale. In a PIM, attributes and assets common to an entire family can be inherited by every product within it, reducing duplication and keeping related products consistent. They also inform how products are grouped in navigation, search, and marketing materials.
