Attribute Family Definition
An Attribute Family is a template that organizes one or more attribute groups into the full data model for a specific type of product, and ties that model to a place in the product hierarchy. It answers the question "what does a product of this type need to be described?" and is closely related to the Product Family, which groups the products themselves.
Why do attribute families exist?
Products naturally fall into types that share a description structure: all ovens need dimensions, energy rating, and compliance data; all t-shirts need size, color, and fabric. An attribute family defines that shared structure once so it can be reused across every product of the type, and so shared values can be set high in the hierarchy and flow down through attribute inheritance instead of being re-entered on each record.
How do they work in a PIM?
In a PIM system, an attribute family assembles the relevant attribute groups into a profile and applies it to a product type or family. Assigning a product to that family activates the correct groups, surfaces required fields, and hides those that do not apply. This drives completeness scoring, channel-specific publishing, and consistent enrichment across similar products, and it lets teams restructure a whole product type's model without touching individual records.
