What is Unified Commerce?

Unified Commerce Definition

Unified commerce is an approach in which all sales channels and business operations, such as webshops, physical stores, marketplaces, inventory, orders, and customer data, run on a shared, real-time data foundation instead of separate, loosely connected systems. Every channel sees the same stock levels, prices, product information, and customer history at the same moment.

How is it different from multichannel and omnichannel?

The three terms describe increasing levels of connection between channels:

  • Multichannel: a business sells through several channels, but each runs largely on its own system with its own data
  • Omnichannel: channels are connected so customers get a consistent experience, but the underlying systems are often separate and synchronized through integrations, which can cause delays and mismatches
  • Unified commerce: channels share one data foundation, so there is nothing to synchronize and no gap between what one channel knows and another

In practice, omnichannel commerce describes the customer experience, while unified commerce describes the technology and data structure behind it.

What does it look like in real life?

A customer checks a jacket online and sees that it is in stock at a nearby store. They reserve it, try it on in the store, decide on a different size, which is shipped to their home, and later return it at another branch. For this to work smoothly, stock, orders, payments, and customer records must be visible and accurate across all locations in real time. If the store system updates inventory only once a night, the customer may arrive to find the jacket already sold.

Why does product data matter?

Unified commerce depends on every channel showing the same accurate product information: names, specifications, images, and prices. If the webshop, store app, and marketplace listings each hold their own copy, inconsistencies appear quickly. A Product Information Management (PIM) system provides a single, central source of product content that all channels draw from, which is a core building block of a unified setup.
