What is GDSN (Global Data Synchronization Network)?

GDSN Definition

GDSN (Global Data Synchronization Network) is a network of connected data pools that lets trading partners, such as brands, suppliers, and retailers, share standardized product data and stay automatically in sync when that data changes. Instead of emailing spreadsheets back and forth, a supplier publishes product information once, and every retailer subscribed to that product receives the same data and any future updates automatically. It is built on GS1 standards and coordinated through GS1's Global Registry.

How does it work?

The network connects through certified data pools, which are databases that store and exchange product information on behalf of their members. A supplier loads product data into its chosen data pool; a retailer subscribes through its own data pool; and the GS1 Global Registry acts as a directory that links the two so the data flows between them. Products are identified by their GTIN and the company by its GS1 company prefix, which ensures both sides are referring to exactly the same item. When the supplier updates a value, the change propagates to every subscribed partner without anyone re-sending a file.

What data does it carry?

GDSN handles the standardized master data that trading partners need to list and move a product, including dimensions, weights, packaging hierarchy (how items are grouped into cases and pallets), ingredients, and regulatory information. It is widely used in grocery, retail, healthcare, and foodservice, where thousands of products change specifications frequently and errors are costly.

How does it relate to a PIM?

A PIM system is where a company manages and enriches its product data internally; GDSN is one of the channels that data is published to externally. Many businesses connect their PIM to a GDSN data pool so that once product information is complete and approved, it can be synchronized to retail partners through the same standardized pipeline, reducing manual work and keeping partners current.
