What is Compliance Data?

Compliance Data Definition

Compliance data is the set of product attributes and documentation required to demonstrate that a product meets applicable legal, regulatory, or industry standards. It is distinct from commercial product content: where a description sells a product, compliance data proves it is safe, legal, and accurately represented.

What does compliance data include?

The specific requirements vary by industry and market, but common examples include safety certifications (CE, UL, RoHS), hazardous material declarations, country-of-origin information, ingredient or material composition, labelling requirements, and environmental data such as recyclability or carbon footprint. For regulated categories like food, cosmetics, electronics, and chemicals, compliance data is mandatory before a product can be sold.

How is it managed alongside product data?

Compliance data is often stored alongside commercial product data in a PIM or a dedicated compliance system, and mapped to regulatory attributes that correspond to specific market or channel requirements. Keeping it centralised reduces the risk of selling non-compliant products and makes it easier to respond to audits, retailer requirements, or regulatory changes across multiple markets.
