Product onboarding is the process of bringing new product data into a system, typically a PIM or ERP, so that it is structured, validated, and ready for use. This includes collecting raw data from suppliers or internal teams, mapping it to the correct fields and taxonomy, and resolving any gaps or inconsistencies before the product is published.

What does onboarding typically involve?

A new product record rarely arrives complete. Suppliers may send data in inconsistent formats, use different attribute names, or omit fields entirely. Onboarding involves normalising that data — ensuring values follow the right format, classifications are applied correctly, and required attributes are present. Some teams use templates or supplier portals to collect data in a structured way upfront, reducing the cleanup needed later.

Why does it matter?

The quality of onboarding directly affects how quickly a product can go live. A well-defined onboarding process with clear data requirements shortens time-to-market and reduces the enrichment work that follows. Poor onboarding, accepting incomplete or inconsistently formatted data, creates downstream problems across every channel the product is published to.
